Grade 2 Titanium Strip Production Process Grade 2 titanium strip is usually supplied in cold worked and heat treated conditions. The base material for production is titanium sponge, which is obtained by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert gas atmosphere. The titanium sponge is pressed into long electrodes and subsequently fed into a vacuum arc remelting furnace to produce titanium ingots. The titanium ingots are further processed to obtain titanium slabs required for the next rolling process. Titanium slabs are first hot rolled at high temperatures on a tandem mill or a Steckel mill. After multiple hot rolling operations, titanium coils with a thickness of 2.8 to 3.5 mm are obtained. The hot rolled titanium coils will be annealed and cleaned by subsequent sandblasting and pickling processes to remove the surface oxide layer.
